Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy aims to assist each individual to reach their optimal physical potential to enable them to achieve their own goals. Physiotherapy focuses on improving both the movement and functional capability of patients. We work towards goals set jointly between the multidisciplinary team, the patient and carers. Treatment programmes include a physical and postural management plan to address problems arising from disability, with specific intervention tailored to meet individual needs.
We do this through:
- Detailed assessment of physical ability and analysis of movement difficulties
- Assistance in regaining / relearning of movement and teaching compensatory strategies when this is not possible
- Physical and postural management programmes designed to maximise ability, minimise secondary impairment (complications) and maximise the quality of life
- Education of the patient and carers to empower them to take responsibility for their own management
- Specific specialist interventions including functional electrical stimulation, acupuncture, splinting, complex postural management systems
- Pre and post assessment/management of patients receiving botulinum toxin for spasticity
In addition to in-patient, day patient, and community settings, physio is also provided at a local social services day centre – the Vauxhall Centre.
